The six face shapes
- Oval: a little longer than wide, with the jaw slightly narrower than the cheekbones.
- Round: length and width close, with soft jaw corners.
- Square: length and width close, with a broad, defined jaw.
- Oblong: clearly longer than wide, with fairly straight sides.
- Heart: wider at the forehead and cheekbones, narrowing to the chin.
- Diamond: cheekbones widest, with a narrower forehead and jaw.
How the face shape detector decides
Stylists judge face shape by comparing four things: face length, forehead width, cheekbone width and jaw width, plus how angular the jaw is. The detector measures the same four widths from the landmark points, plus the angle at each jaw corner, and scores how well your proportions match each shape. Many faces sit between two shapes, which is why you see a percentage for all six rather than a single label. If two shapes are close, both sets of styling advice apply.
How to measure your face shape without an app
With a mirror and a soft tape measure: measure forehead width across the widest part, cheekbone width from the outer point of each cheekbone, jaw width from below each ear to the jaw corner, and face length from the hairline to the bottom of the chin. Compare them the way the list above describes. The detector does the same thing from a photo, but cannot see your hairline, so it measures length from the upper forehead and adjusts for it.
Hairstyles and glasses for your face shape
Face shape is a starting point for choosing haircuts and frames, not a rule. Common advice is to add contrast: angular frames for round faces, rounder frames for square faces, width at the sides for oblong faces. Our guide to hairstyles and glasses for every face shape goes through each one.
