Golden ratio face calculator

See how close your facial proportions come to the golden ratio, φ ≈ 1.618. The calculator measures six ratios that golden-ratio face guides use, shows each value, and gives a match percentage for each one.

Which ratios the calculator compares

  • Face length to width: forehead to chin, divided by cheekbone width.
  • Mouth width to nose width: corner-to-corner mouth width divided by nostril width.
  • Lower lip to upper lip: visible lower lip height divided by upper lip height.
  • Mouth-to-chin to nose-to-mouth: how the lower third of the face is split.
  • Face width to outer eye span: cheekbone width divided by the distance between outer eye corners.
  • Nose-to-chin to nose length: the lower face compared with the length of the nose.

Each match percentage falls as your ratio moves away from 1.618 in either direction. The overall score is their average.

A note on face length

The model’s top point sits on the upper forehead, below most hairlines, so it cannot see the full forehead. To make the face-length ratio comparable with golden-ratio charts that measure from the hairline, the calculator scales it to a typical hairline position. If your hairline is unusually high or low, read that line with some caution.

Is the golden ratio really the key to a beautiful face?

Probably not. The idea became popular through a “phi mask” design, but studies have found that it fits some faces better than others and that phi on its own is a weak predictor of how attractive people find a face. A 2010 study by Pallett, Link and Lee found different ratios worked best for the faces they tested: an eye-to-mouth distance of about 36% of face length and a pupil distance of about 46% of face width. Our golden ratio guide covers the history and the evidence, and the attractiveness test uses those newer ratios.

Getting a consistent measurement

Take the photo straight on, at eye level, with a neutral expression and closed lips. Smiling changes mouth and lip ratios more than anything else on this page. Try two or three photos and look at which ratios stay stable; those are the ones that describe your face rather than the picture.

Frequently asked questions

What does the golden ratio face score mean?

It is the average closeness of six facial ratios to 1.618. A higher score means the ratios in that photo sit nearer to phi; it does not measure beauty.

What is the golden ratio?

An irrational number, about 1.618, where a line split into two parts has the whole-to-long-part ratio equal to the long-to-short-part ratio. It appears in geometry and art, and it has been applied to faces since the 1990s.

Can I change my golden ratio score?

Expression, head angle and camera distance change it from photo to photo. Bone structure does not change, so focus on consistent photos rather than the number.
